United Indonesia: The Strength of Pancasila’s Third Pillar

The third principle of Pancasila, “Persatuan Indonesia,” or the Unity of Indonesia, is a crucial pillar emphasizing the importance of national unity amidst the nation’s abundant diversity. This principle serves as the binding force that unites various ethnic groups, religions, races, and cultures within the unitary state of the Republic of Indonesia.

“Unity of Indonesia” acknowledges that Indonesia is a pluralistic nation, but this diversity is not an obstacle but rather a treasure that must be preserved and cherished. Awareness of unity encourages every citizen to prioritize national interests above those of groups or individuals, fostering a sense of collective identity.

This third principle instills a spirit of nationalism and love for the homeland. A sense of belonging to Indonesia as a single entity motivates every individual to contribute positively to national development and safeguard the nation’s sovereignty from all forms of threats.

The implementation of “Unity of Indonesia” is reflected in various national integration efforts, such as infrastructure development connecting different regions, educational policies instilling national values, and the preservation of regional cultures as part of the national heritage.

Mutual cooperation, or “gotong royong,” a noble value of the nation, is also a manifestation of this third principle. The spirit of helping each other and working together to overcome various challenges and achieve common goals is a tangible embodiment of Indonesian unity.

This third principle also emphasizes the importance of tolerance and mutual respect among differences. Conflicts and divisions must be avoided by prioritizing dialogue and deliberation to reach consensus for the common interests of the nation.

Media and various communication platforms play a vital role in strengthening Indonesian unity. Positive narratives about diversity and unity must be continuously echoed to counter the potential for disintegration and promote national cohesion.

By practicing “Unity of Indonesia,” the Indonesian nation can stand strong and face various global challenges. The strength of unity becomes the main capital in realizing an advanced, just, and prosperous Indonesia, in accordance with the ideals of Pancasila for all its citizens.
